But of course, the world did not talk about the cinematography in 1992. They talked about the sex. The Lover was the first major studio film to be released with the then-new NC-17 rating in the United States (replacing the infamous X-rating). The MPAA deemed the film’s erotic content too strong for an R-rating. This effectively killed its chances at a wide mainstream release.
